• To the south of the town centre is a large peat bed unique to the region.
• In 1933, while dry, the peat bed began burning but became a shallow lake by the 1940s.
• But it is tolerant of other soils including rich clay loams, neutral dry soils, or a'peat bed'( with mainly leafmold and rotting wood ).
• The radiocarbon dates of peat bed at Kasdreddinilem reveals an age of 4608 plus or minus 122 yrs BP, indicating the shift in mangrove line eastwards during the regressive phase.
